Alabama in Sixth After the Opening Round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate

Crimson Tide finished the day with a team total of 8-over par 296
DALTON, Ga. – The No. 21-ranked Alabama men's golf team finished Friday's opening round of play at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in sixth overall after carding a team score of 8-over par 296.
The Crimson Tide will enter the second round just six shots back of second place and 12 shots behind clubhouse leader No. 3 Georgia Tech (284).
The tournament, which is slated for 54 holes over three days (Friday through Sunday), boasts a strong field that features a total of 15 teams, eight of which are ranked or receiving votes in the Preseason Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll.
ROUND OF THE DAY
- Junior Wilson Furr, who is coming off a strong summer of play in which he earned three top-five finishes in major amateur tournaments, led the Tide as he finished the day with an even par 72 and is in a tie for seventh overall.
- It was Furr's 25th career round of par or better and the 11th over his last 16 rounds played dating back to last spring.
OTHER PERFORMERS
- Thomas Ponder, who was one of three UA freshmen making their collegiate debut at the event, is in a tie for 14th overall after carding a 1-over par 73.
- Freshman Tyler Lipscomb also had a solid performance in his Crimson Tide debut, carding a 3-over par 75 to end the day in a tie for 30th overall.
- Sophomore Frankie Capan III (76) and freshman Simms Abney (81) rounded out the Alabama starting five in 40th and 75th position, respectively.
FUN FACT
- Lipscomb, playing in his first collegiate event, recorded one of just 10 eagles throughout the entire field on day one. The Carrollton, Ga., native drained a long put to record a three on the 498-yard par 5 12th hole.
NEXT ROUND
- Alabama will tee off round two at 7:50 a.m. CT (8:50 a.m. ET) off Hole No. 1 and will be paired alongside USF and South Carolina.
