Alabama Men’s Golf Vaults up Leaderboard After Strong Second Round at Carpet Capital Collegiate

The Crimson Tide cards the second-best round by any team on Saturday to improve three spots into third overall
DALTON, Ga. – The No. 21-ranked Alabama men's golf team carded a 1-over par 289 during Saturday's second round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate – the second-lowest round by any team in the 15-team field – to vault three spots up the leaderboard into third place overall. The Crimson Tide will enter the final 18 holes of play with a 36-hole total of 585 (296-289).
Tournament-host and No. 3 Georgia Tech leads the field by 12 strokes at 7-under par 569, while North Florida is four strokes ahead of the Tide at 5-over par 581. Clemson (587), ranked No. 17 in the nation, is in fourth, while USF (589) rounds out the top five teams, respectively.
LEADING THE WAY
- Junior Wilson Furr carded a round of 1-under par 71 and is in a tie for fourth overall with a 143 (72-71) after 36 holes played.
- It was Furr's second consecutive round of par or better to start the fall season and the 26th such 18-hole score of his career. Dating back to last spring, the Jackson, Miss., native has recorded par or better in 12 of the last 16 rounds he has played.
ROUND OF THE DAY
- Sophomore Frankie Capan III rebounded from an opening round 76 on Friday with a 3-under par 69 on Saturday. He will enter the third round of play in a tie for 11th overall with a 36-hole total of 145.
- It marked his fifth career round in the 60s for the North Oaks, Minn., native and matched his fourth-lowest round in his Alabama career.
OTHER PERFORMERS
- Thomas Ponder continues to play impressively in his first collegiate tournament. A native of Dothan, Ala., Ponder followed up his 1-over par 73 on Friday with an even par score of 72 on Saturday. He is tied with Capan for 11th overall entering the final round of action.
- Freshmen Tyler Lipscomb (75-79/154) and Simms Abney (81-77/158) round out the Alabama starting five in 53rd and 71st, respectively.
FUN FACT
- In this same tournament a year ago, Capan carded a career-best round of 66, which also came in the second round of action. Last year, he carded an opening round 74 and followed that with the 6-under par score. This year, Capan 76 and responded with the round of the day for UA.
NEXT ROUND
- Alabama will tee off the third and final round of action at 8:40 a.m. CT (9:40 a.m. ET) off Hole No. 1 and will be paired alongside Georgia Tech and North Florida.
