Alabama Women’s Tennis Closes Out SEC Challenge No. 1 with a Pair of Wins

Vanesa Nikolovova and Anne Marie Hiser both notched wins on the Challenge’s final day of competition
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama women's tennis team closed out the SEC Challenge #1 in Tuscaloosa, Ala., with a pair of three-set wins Sunday afternoon. The three-day tournament featured players from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky and Mississippi State in both singles and doubles matches.
Freshman Anne Marie Hiser grabbed her second win of the weekend, battling back from a 3-0 deficit in the deciding set to get a 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 victory over freshman Ariana Arseneault of Georgia. Freshman Vanesa Nikolovova grabbed her first win representing the Crimson Tide on the tourney's final day, downing senior Elena Christofi, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.
HEAD COACH JENNY MAINZ SAID
"I thought we closed out things strong today, getting wins in the last two matches on the court. For most of our team, this was their first time playing competitive matches in more than six months, so we were able to knock some rust off and you saw that day by day. One thing we talked about this morning before we got going was getting our teeth into matches and I think you saw that in some spots as the day went on. We haven't really worked on our doubles a lot to this point in the fall, and that's something we're going to focus more on in the coming weeks. When we're playing good doubles, that will gives us momentum and confidence in singles as well."
