The Crimson Tide defeat both Liberty and Purdue, 8-0, in five innings
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama softball continued to roll on day two of the Easton Bama Bash Saturday at Rhoads Stadium, posting a pair of 8-0 run rule shutouts over both Liberty and Purdue.
Alabama (9-0) started the day with a run-rule win over Liberty (1-8), leading 4-0 after a four-run second inning until Audrey Vandagriff ended the game in the fifth with her first career grand slam to cap the 8-0 shutout. In the second game against Purdue (5-3), the Crimson Tide took the early lead with two runs in the first and another in the second before breaking through with five in the fourth, including a huge two-run home run from Alexis Pupillo celebrating her senior day.
Audrey Vandagriff set the tone at the top of the order, going a combined 3-for-6 on the day with a career-best five RBIs against the Flames. Pupillo and Salen Hawkins drove in three RBIs while Brooke Wells tallied a pair, putting her and Pupillo at the top of the team standings this year with 14 RBIs each. In the circle, Vic Moten (5-0) threw 5.0 shutout innings for the win against Liberty with just one hit and one walk allowed and Jocelyn Briski (2-0) had seven strikeouts through 3.0 innings of work against Purdue to earn the win.
From Head Coach Patrick Murphy
"It's like a Hollywood script, you know? I told them before the first game, you don't have to force it and try to 'win one for the Gipper' today. We're just going to celebrate [Alexis Pupillo]. Whether you go 0-for-4 or 4-for-4, whether you throw a shutout or get smacked, who cares? The performance doesn't matter. It's just that you're on this team, and we're gonna celebrate you. This is the first senior day of seven this year, and hopefully it's a trend that continues, because today was a really good one."
