Oklahoma State broke a four-year streak held by four-time defending champion Clemson with its one under par finish that claimed the championship of the 16th annual Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate.
The Cowboys shot 286-280-285/851, overcoming windy conditions in Tuesday’s third and final round at the par 71 Old Overton Club in Birmingham. Oklahoma State won by two strokes over Wake Forest (853) which finished one over par after taking a thirteen under par score into the clubhouse after Monday’s first two rounds. Clemson finished third at eight over (860), followed by Arizona (862), Georgia Tech (868), Auburn (871), Texas and Georgia (876), UAB (883), host school the University of Alabama (889), UNLV (894) and Arizona State (900).
Two men emerged as co-champions as Clemson’s D.J. Trahan (70-68-67/205) and Oklahoma State’s Hunter Mahan (68-72-65/205) bested the field of 60 golfers with their eight under par finishes, two strokes ahead of two-round leader Bill Haas of Wake Forest who finished next, two strokes back at six under par (71-65-71/207).
Alabama, which had won one tournament and finished second in the other in its only two previous fall tournaments, had two players finish tied at 32nd, Nick Rousey (73-74-75/222) and Lars Brovold (73-75-74/222). Mac Butler finished tied at 38th (75-77-74/226) with among others, his Alabama teammate Clint Provost (72-74-80/226). And Wesley Pate finished a stroke back and tied at 42nd (77-70-80/227).
“Certainly I feel confident that the effort was there this week but the execution obviously was not,” said Alabama head men’s golf coach Dick Spybey. “Lack of execution comes from a lot of things, and that’s our job this week, to try to pinpoint some of those things and return to the kind of play that we began the year with and that this team is capable of producing. I am confident that this group can do just that.”
