TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama opened up the 2004 Fall Classic on a high note, riding powerful pitching performances en route to a 6-0 victory over the Seminole State Trojans Friday afternoon at The Joe.
Evan Bush homered in the bottom of the second inning to give the Tide a 1-0 lead. Alabama was down to the final out in the bottom of the fifth when Allen Rice started a rally which produced two runs from the big bats of left fielder Gabe Scott, Rice, and transfer catcher Kody Valverde from the University of New Orleans.
Pitching was key for the Tide this afternoon. Alabama held Seminole to only two hits on the arms of Brent Carter, Trey Shields, David Robertson, and Josh Copeland. Carter left early in the third inning with a hamstring injury, leaving the door open for Shields, who pitched just over three innings giving up only one hit and striking out three. Robertson and Copeland came up big for the Tide late in the game, combining for no hits, six strikeouts, which pleased Alabama head coach Jim Wells.
"I thought Robertson and Copeland threw well," said Wells. "Our game plan was to be aggressive and swing the bats and not to swing at balls and some of the main guys did that today."
Alabama continues play in the 2004 Fall Classic Saturday at The Joe at 1:00 when the Tide plays host to San Jacinto Junior College, which has produced big names in the past such as Roger Clemens and Andy Pettite.
