DALTON, GA. ?? Mark Harrell shot one under par in Sunday's final round to help the University of Alabama sophomore golfer to a 12th place individual finish at the Carpet Capital Classic. The 54-hole, three day tournament concluded Sunday. Alabama, which finished 15th, was one of 18 teams competing among a field that included nine Top-25 ranked teams.
Georgia State, coached by former Alabama golfer Matt Clark, won the tournament's championship, finishing eight under par after posting team round scores of 284-289-283. Florida finished second a stroke back (857), and top-ranked and defending national champion Georgia finished third at one under par (863).
Those were the only three teams that finished under par for the weekend. Georgia Tech finished fourth at three over (867), followed by Texas Tech (872), Clemson (874), Tennessee and Duke (880), East Tennessee State (881), North Carolina State (885), Auburn (888), TCU (891), Georgia Southern (893), South Carolina (896), Alabama (303-297-299/899), Vanderbilt (900), Augusta State (903) and Oklahoma (910).
Georgia State's Mark Haastrup was medalist. He carded round scores of 71-67-76/205 to finish 11 under par. He finished two strokes ahead of Clemson's David May (68-74-65/207).
Harrell posted Alabama's best individual finish of the weekend, tying for 12th at even par (73-72-71/216). Next was Matthew Swan who finished T-45th (77-76-70/223). Gator Todd finished T-76th (77-72-84/233), and Stewart Whitt (77-80-77/234) and Joseph Sykora (76-77-81/234) were among a tie at 79th.
Alabama now puts the clubs up for the winter. The collegiate golf season is a year long, beginning in the fall with a winter (weather) break in the middle. Alabama picks up its season again February 5-7 when it will play at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., in the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship.
The Crimson Tide's fall season schedule included five tournaments. It finished among the top five in three of those tournaments, with a best of second place of 14 teams and two-under-par finish at the University of Tennessee's Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions. Alabama finished eight under par as a team and in fourth place at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate and fifth at East Tennessee State's Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.
