Women's Tennis Wins Six at Coaches Classic

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The women's tennis team picked up six wins Thursday following the opening round of singles play at the SEC Fall Coaches Classic. Securing victories for the Crimson Tide was Paulina Bigos, Meritt Emery, Shelley Godwin, Taylor Lindsey, Alice Tunaru and Tiffany Welcher.
"I thought we had a strong first day and really came ready to play," said Head Coach Jenny Mainz. We had good energy and competed well. Overall I was really pleased with the performances."
The Tide had representatives in all seven singles draws in the tournament. Each draw contains eight players and will have both a front and back draw with the exception of the green draw that has six competitors and will played round-robin style. In the white draw, Welcher cruised past Tennessee's Samantha Orlin 6-2, 6-3, while Emery outlasted the Lady Volunteers' Zsofia Zubor in the gold draw 7-6(2), 7-6(4). Bigos had a close two-setter in the silver draw winning 7-6(5), 7-5 over Ole Miss' Gabriela Rangle. Lindsey also met up with an Ole Miss opponent in Mimi Renaudin where the Tide freshman took the 6-2, 6-4 victory. Godwin, once again, dominated her match winning 6-1, 6-1 over Auburn's Dunja Djuranovic. Rounding out the group was Tunaru who won a close 7-6(4), 6-4 match over Vanderbilt's Erica Robertson. Also representing the Tide in singles was Courtney McLane, who dropped a 6-3, 6-3 match in the crimson draw to the Commodores' Jackie Wu.
The four-day tournament will continue Friday at 9:00 a.m. (CST) with the first two rounds of doubles followed by the second round of singles. All matches will be played at the University of Alabama Tennis Stadium weather permitting. Should the matches be moved indoors, the Hank Crisp Indoor Courts will host all action.
"We'll certainly be ready to go tomorrow," added Mainz. "It's important we get a jump start and be ready to play on first ball."
