TUSCALOOSA, Ala.- The University of Alabama women's tennis team won the team award for the highest grade point average for the 2007-08 academic year at the annual Student-Athlete Academic Achievement Awards Banquet held April 28 in "The Zone" at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
"I am proud of the diligent effort our team exhibited in the scholastic arena," said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. "They are to be commended for their commitment to academic excellence. It was a complete team effort as each of them contributed to attaining this award. Our team views this award as both prestigious and meaningful. They have taken tremendous pride in excelling in the classroom."
The 2008 squad won the award with an overall GPA of 3.51, the highest of any Tide team on campus. This award is the sixth team GPA award for the team since 2002 and the 3.51 grade point average is the highest since 2004.
"Fern Hampton is largely responsible for the academic distinction in our women's tennis program," said Mainz. "She works diligently in order for our team to achieve their academic potential. We are fortunate to have Fern as an integral part of our Alabama tennis team."
Junior Shelley Godwin was also recognized at the banquet as one of 10 women's finalists for the Paul W. Bryant Award.
