FLUSHING, N.Y. - Freshman Mary Anne Macfarlane ousted Tennessee freshman Brynn Boren 6-1, 6-4 Saturday to advance to the finals of the 2010 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor singles consolation finals. In addition, sophomore Alexa Guarachi was awarded the USTA/ITA Sportsmanship Award that was voted on by the tournament committee and officials.
"I continue to be encouraged as we move along in this tournament," Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz said. "Alexa winning the USTA/ITA Sportsmanship Award is such an honor not only for her, but for our entire team. She has represented our program in such a positive light at one of the most prestigious events and against some of the nation's most elite competitors. She plays with a great competitive spirit, exemplifying just how much she truly loves the game of tennis."
Macfarlane began the day with her quarterfinal match where she took down North Carolina sophomore Zoe De Bruycker 6-3, 6-1 before facing Boren in the semifinals. She will take on SMU junior Marta Lesniak Sunday at 9 a.m. CT at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center for the finals crown.
"Mary Anne had two solid performances today," Mainz said. "She took away her opponent's strengths and really dictated play. I am very encouraged and pleased with her ability to bounce back from her first-round loss. She is taking full advantage of her opportunity here and needs to continue that tomorrow."
Junior Courtney McLane and Guarachi were also in action on Saturday in the semifinals of the doubles main draw where the Crimson Tide duo was edged by Florida sophomore Allie Will and freshman Sophie Oyen 6-4, 7-6(6).
"I thought Alexa and Courtney did a good job," Mainz added. "We wanted to position ourselves to gain valuable matches and compete for the national championship, and I think they did that. It was just a handful of points that decided the match. I thought we needed to return better, and in a match like that we gave Florida too many points there. I thought we could have been more aggressive in the first set. To really take over the match, both Alexa and Courtney need to be more active at the net. There were a lot of momentum shifts with unforced errors, and I think Florida locked in on the big points. Overall, I am very optimistic about Courtney and Alexa leading our team in doubles."
