FLUSHING, N.Y. - Freshman Mary Anne Macfarlane fell in the singles consolation finals of the 2010 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Sunday at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The Crimson Tide netter fought hard but was edged by SMU junior Marta Lesniak 5-7, 7-6(4), 6-3.
"It was a high quality match played both ways," Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz said. "Mary Anne did a fantastic job of grabbing the first set after being down a break at 4-5. The second set was back and forth and Mary Anne once again broke after being down 4-5. She struggled to capitalize on her 6-5 lead in the second set and lost some momentum heading into the tiebreaker. Lesniak picked up confidence in the tiebreaker and early in the third set racing out to a fast 4-0 lead. I think Mary Anne just dug too deep of a hole in the third set. She did, however, play commanding tennis all weekend. The two matches she fell short in she battled and forced her opponents to play their best. I liked her energy throughout the tournament and feel she elevated her game. I'm excited about the way she's finished the fall season."
Alabama has now finished the fall portion of its season and will pick back up on Jan. 15, when it heads to the Florida State University Quad Tournament in Tallahassee, Fla.
