TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Saturday's Alabama Swimming and Diving meet against Emory and Tulane will be the final event of the UA Athletics department's "Power of Pink" fall schedule of events. The Crimson Tide's Power of Pink initiative, which helps raise awareness for the fight against breast cancer, is sponsored by Tuscaloosa Toyota. During the Tide's first home meet of the season, which gets underway at at noon, fans will have the opportunity to win prizes, in addition to receiving giveaway items during the meet.
"This is always a great event for us, one that our student-athletes look forward to all year," head swimming and diving coach Eric McIlquham said. "As a program, we always want to be able to give back to the community around us and this, along with other events like it, really allow us to do that in a meaningful way."
Prior to the start of the meet, the first 100 fans through the door will receive a "Power of Pink" t-shirt. Throughout the meet, fans will have an opportunity to win hats, Tervis tumblers, headbands and umbrellas. One lucky fan will win an iPad through a raffle.
The Power of Pink initiative, originally started in 2004 by Tide gymnastics coach Sarah Patterson to raise awareness in the fight against breast cancer in the West Alabama community, grew to include all women's teams at the Capstone in the fall of 2009.
