TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama head softball coach Patrick Murphy announced the signing of Haylie McCleney, Tuesday morning. McCleney will come to the Capstone from Mortimer Jordan High School in Kimberly, Alabama.
"Haylie was our top target in Alabama of the 2012 class and was probably one of the most highly recruited kids ever from our state," Murphy said. "She has great instincts for the game both on the field and at the plate.
McCleney helped lead Moritmer Jordan to three state championships en route to being named first team all-state three times. McCleney sported a .605 batting average, scored 99 runs and has never been thrown out stealing a base during her high school career.
McCleney played her club softball for the Gold Coast Hurricanes, where she helped lead the squad to a fourth place finish at the 2011 ASA Gold Nationals.
"Haylie is an on-base machine as a leadoff hitter," Murphy added. "She is an excellent student and a great young lady from a very athletic family."
She also played basketball, where she was a three-time All-Metro team and All-Area selection. The Birmingham News has named Haylie the Female Athlete of the Year the past two years.
Off the field she belongs to the National Honors Society and participates in the Big Brothers, Big Sisters and Spanish Clubs. Her father John McCleney played collegiate baseball at Samford University.
