Alabama now leads the league with nine weekly awards this year, including four different freshmen
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama softball took home a pair of weekly accolades from the Southeastern Conference following a road sweep at Auburn, with junior infielder Jena Young as the SEC Player of the Week and freshman pitcher Vic Moten as the SEC Freshman of the Week.
Young batted a scorching .833 (5-for-6) across the Auburn series, reaching base safely in nine of her 10 plate appearances for a .900 on base percentage. She reached safely at least twice in every game with three of her five hits going for extra bases. She hit two triples in Friday's opener against the Tigers, becoming just the sixth player in program history to do so.
Moten contributed to a pair of shutouts last week, starting with a 1-2-3 fifth inning in the midweek run rule win over South Alabama. In game two against Auburn, Moten allowed just one hit and three walks over 7.0 shutout innings, with only one baserunner advancing past first base. She now has four solo shutouts this season and has contributed to an additional five combined shutouts.
It is the first accolade this season for Young, joining Brooke Wells (March 11) as the Tide's second Player of the Week honoree. Moten, who was previously named Pitcher of the Week on March 11, becomes the fourth Alabama freshman to win Freshman of the Week this year along with Kaitlyn Pallozzi (Feb. 24), Ana Roman (March 11) and Ambrey Taylor (April 7). Combined with Jocelyn Briski's two Pitcher of the Week accolades (March 3, March 18), the Tide now boasts an SEC-leading nine weekly awards so far this year.
