TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama men's golf team finished in fifth place at the season-opening Carpet Capital Collegiate. The Tide closed the 54-hole event at 11-under par 853 (286-283-284) on the par-72, 7,012-yard The Farm Golf Club.
"This was a great tournament for us," Alabama head coach Jay Seawell said. "We learned a lot about ourselves. Our young guys learned that there is a fine line between winning and not winning a tournament. You have to play really well to win these types of tournaments. There some things we'll take from this experience and learn from it and move forward as a team."
Sophomore Robby Shelton finished second overall after carding three consecutive sub-70 rounds. The Wilmer, Ala., native recorded rounds of 69-68-69 to finish at 10-under par 206. He now has shot in the 60s in 19 of his 39 career rounds played at Alabama. Georgia Tech's Ollie Schniederjans claimed individual medalist honors with a 12-under par 204.
"I'm proud of Robby," Seawell added. "He gave it a good run. He had a little lull in the middle of his round and that probably kept him from winning. He will take the same lessons we have to take as a team and that will make him better in the long run."
Sophomore Dru Love also had a solid showing in his first tournament for the Crimson Tide. The son of Davis Love III had three rounds below par and finished in a tie for 10th overall at 4-under par 212 (71-70-71).
True freshman Jonathan Hardee tied for 32nd overall at 2-over par 218 after carding rounds of 72, 73 and 73 in his first collegiate tournament. Junior Tom Lovelady responded on Sunday with his best round of the three-day event with a 1-under par 71 and finished tied for 41st overall with a 219 (76-72-71). Tuscaloosa native Tyler Hitchner (74-74-76) rounded out the Crimson Tide with a 224.
South Carolina shot a 12-under 276 during Sunday's final round and finished with a 16-under 848 to claim the tournament title, clipping Georgia Tech (849) by one stroke. Auburn and Kennesaw State each tied for third with a 12-under par 852.
Alabama will return to action next weekend when it competes at the Olympia Fields Fighting Illini Invitational, at Olympia Fields Country Club just outside of Chicago on Sept. 12-14. The Tide captured an 18-shot victory in the same event last year, while Shelton won individual medalist honors in what was his first collegiate event.
