Back and forth game finished in White’s favor to claim game two
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The White squad came away with a 6-4 win in the second game of the "Steak and Beans" World Series on Friday afternoon at Sewell-Thomas Stadium to claim the series victory with back-to-back wins in consecutive days.
The two teams matched on hits with eight apiece, but White capitalized on their opportunities to claim the series win. White struck first in the game, using the top of the first to tally the game's first run. Gene Wood singled to start the game and then advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. A passed ball put Wood 90-feet away before a one-out grounder to the right side brought the leadoff man across to make it 1-0.
In the bottom of the second, Crimson evened things up with one of their own thanks to a solo homer from Zack Coker to make it 1-1 after two innings of play.
White answered back in the top of the third, plating a pair of runs to regain the lead. Tanner Boyzuick led off the frame with a walk, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. A walk to Wood put a pair on and then a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. Connor Stutts sent a sacrifice fly to left to bring in the inning's first run and move White in front again. Cobie Vance followed with a single to left to bring in the frame's second run and make it 3-1 heading to the bottom of the inning.
Crimson came right back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third. Logan Carey led off with a single to left and then Chandler Avant doubled to put the first two batters in scoring position. Hunter Alexander scored both in the very next at-bat to make it 3-3 after three full innings of play.
In the fourth, White regained its lead, scoring one to make it 4-3. Henry sent a single to first and one out later moved to third on a Tanner DeVinny single. John Trousdale followed with a single to left to score Henry and put White in front. Crimson returned the favor with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame. Alex Webb led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and then one out later came home on a passed ball to send it to the fifth even at 4-4.
The top of five saw White pull back in front with two runs. Stutts started the rally with a one-out double and moved himself to third on a passed ball. Vance was intentionally walked to put two on and then a single to center and a misplay by the fielder allowed both Stutts and Vance to score to make it 6-4.
Deacon Medders got the Friday win, throwing 1.2 innings and striking out three. The freshman was followed by Davis Vainer, who earned the save with 1.0 inning of work and one strikeout.
Saturday will mark the final game of the "Steak and Beans" World Series, with a 10:30 a.m. CT first pitch. Gates will be open and admission is free to all fans wishing to watch game three prior to the Alabama-Texas A&M kickoff.
