VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. – The No. 24 Alabama men's golf team is in eighth place after 36 holes of the 2016 Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, which is being played at the par 70, 7,204-yard Old Overton Club in Vestavia Hills, Ala. The Crimson Tide began with a 289 during the morning round and followed that by carding a 285 in the afternoon to finish the day with a team total of 14-over par 574 (289-285).
Third-ranked Auburn (284-274) and No. 21 Baylor (274-284) share the team lead as both teams enter Tuesday's final 18 holes at 2-under par 558. UAB is six strokes back in third overall at 564, while No. 42 UNLV (567) and No. 28 Arkansas (570) round out the top five, respectively.
Alabama was led on the day by junior Lee Hodges, who is currently in a tie for eighth with a 36-hole total of 1-under 139 (70-69). Hodges was a combined 4-under par on par 4 and par 5 holes on Monday, but struggled on the par 3s where he finished the day at 3-over par.
Junior Steven Setterstrom began his day with the team's high round of 79 in the opening 18 holes, but responded with a career-low tying score of 3-under par 67 in the afternoon round to finish the day with a 6-over par 146. Setterstrom is in 35th overall entering the final 18 holes.
Sophomore Davis Riley, who entered the tournament leading the Crimson Tide in stroke average at 72.17, is in a tie for 36th place just one stroke behind Setterstrom with a two round total of 147 (71-76). Senior Robby Prater (74-74/148) and junior Tyler Hitchner (74-75/149) round out the Tide in 43rd and 45th position, respectively.
The Tide, which has won four straight and eight of the last 10 JPNI titles, will tee of Tuesday's third and final round at 8:50 a.m. CT off Hole No. 10. Alabama will be paired alongside Florida State and South Alabama.
The Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate began back in 1986 and is named for the most successful professional golfer in Crimson Tide history. Pate currently plays on the Champions Tour and is active in the team selection for the tournament.
Shelton will be aiming for his second consecutive medalist honor after claiming the Dick's Sporting Goods Collegiate Cup last weekend. If he achieves the feat, Shelton will join a list among some powerful names in the world of golf to win the JPNI individual title. Current PGA Tour golfers, Michael Thompson, Bud Cauley, Hunter Mahan, Jordan Spieth, Rory Sabbatini and D.J. Trahan have all won medalist honors at the Pate, and arguably the greatest golfer of all-time, Tiger Woods, won the JPNI in 1994 while competing for Stanford. David Kirkpatrick (1991), Joseph Sykora (2006), Mark Harrell (2007), Hunter Hamrick (2009) and Justin Thomas (2012) all took medalist honors for Alabama.
The third and final round begins at 8 a.m. CT on Tuesday and admission to the event is free for the general public. Live stats can be found on Golfstat.com.
