Junior Abbie Boswell led the Tide with a season-high two goals
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama women's soccer rallied in the second half, but fell short to Auburn, 4-2, on Tuesday night at the Alabama Soccer Complex. The Crimson Tide (8-6-1, 0-5-1 SEC) outshot the Tigers (6-4-3, 3-1-2 SEC), 23-10, in the loss.
"We're discouraged with this being our fourth loss in a row," coach Wes Hart said. "We're playing good opponents, and they're making us pay. They're making the most out of their opportunities. I'm not dissatisfied with the soccer that we're playing, but we just lack quality in the box."
Junior Abbie Boswell led the Crimson Tide's offensive attack netting a season-high of two goals on seven shot attempts, and redshirt freshman Chloe Maize turned in a career-high night, launching five shots with one on goal.
The Tigers opened the match with the first shot towards goal, but Alabama responded with four consecutive shots and two corners to put the Tigers on their heels in the first 20 minutes.
In the 26th minute, Maize got hot, striking back-to-back shots from the right wing that both sailed just above the crossbar.
Then in the 34th minute, Auburn tallied the first goal of the match off a header for the 1-0 advantage.
Alabama tried to respond with two great opportunities by Maize ten minutes later and freshman Nicole Lyubenko right before the half, but their attempts sailed just outside the frame to end the half down by one.
Ten minutes into the second half, the Tigers tallied the second goal of the match off the foot of Kristen Dodson to extend its lead to 2-0.
Not deterred from the two-score deficit, Alabama drew a foul in front of the Auburn goal line to set up a penalty kick, and Boswell sent it in, putting Alabama on the board in the 69th minute.
Two minutes following the penalty kick, the Tigers regained its two-score lead, striking a goal in the 71st minute to go up, 3-1.
Despite being down by a pair of goals for the second time, Boswell answered the call again netting her fifth goal of the year less than 20 seconds later.
Then in the 79th minute, Auburn put the game out of reach off a rebound that found the back of the net, to pick up its third conference victory of the year.
Despite outshooting Auburn 15-5 in the second half, the Tigers were able to connect on four of its ten shots to come out on top. In the net, senior goalkeeper Kat Stratton played 90:00 minutes and record one save.
Alabama returns to the pitch on Sunday, Oct. 10 to take on Mississippi State at 5 p.m. CT at the Alabama Soccer Complex for the Power of Pink match and Senior Day.
