TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The fourth-ranked Alabama men's golf team will look to keep its hot start to the season going when it begins play at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate title on Monday at the par-70, 7,204-yard Old Overton Country Club.
The 2017 Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate will mark the tournament's 32nd year of existence. This year's event will consist of 36 holes (two rounds) on Monday beginning at 7:30 a.m. followed by a third and final round that is scheduled to tee off at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
This week's event will mark Alabama's third tournament of the fall season, having compiled an overall record of 26-1-1 over its previous two events. After finishing tied for first in the season opener at the Carpet Capital Collegiate, the Tide recorded a second-place finish at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational.
The two previous tournaments featured a total of 30 teams, with 24 opponents ranked or receiving votes to be ranked in the preseason top-25. Alabama boasts a record of 22-1-1 this season against top-25 competition. UA's lone defeat was to Texas A&M, the No. 1-ranked team in the latest poll.
This year's Jerry Pate boasts another strong field that features seven squads in the 12-team field that are ranked among the nation's top-40 teams in this week's Bushnell Golfweek Division I Coaches Poll. In addition to the fourth-ranked Crimson Tide, other ranked teams competing in the event include No. 7 Baylor, No. 11 Auburn, No. 16 Arkansas, No. 21 BYU No. 29 UNLV and No. 40 Mississippi State, along with Charlotte, Michigan, Samford, South Alabama and UAB.
Alabama's starting lineup will include junior Davis Riley, who will be playing in the top slot. Joining Riley will be seniors Lee Hodges, Jonathan Hardee and Steven Setterstrom, while true freshman Davis Shore rounds out the Tide's starting five.
The Crimson Tide will begin its round at 7:30 a.m. CT on Hole No. 1 and will be paired alongside Arkansas and Baylor. The second round will begin at approximately 12:30 p.m. CT with Alabama teeing off on the 10th hole.
The Tide has captured four of the last five Jerry Pate Intercollegiate titles and has claimed the team title in eight of the last 11 years (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015).
The Jerry Pate Intercollegiate began back in 1986 and is named for one of the most successful professional golfers in Crimson Tide history. Pate remains an active part in the tournament as he participates in the team selection for the tournament and presents the trophy to the winning team each year.
Since its inception, the JPNI has seen some powerful names in the world of golf win its individual title. Current PGA Tour golfers, Michael Thompson, Bud Cauley, Hunter Mahan, Jordan Spieth, Rory Sabbatini and D.J. Trahan have all won medalist honors at the Pate, and arguably the greatest golfer of all-time, Tiger Woods, won the JPNI in 1994 while competing for Stanford. David Kirkpatrick (1991), Joseph Sykora (2006), Mark Harrell (2007), Hunter Hamrick (2009) and Justin Thomas (2012) all took medalist honors for Alabama.
Admission to the event is free for the general public.
