Lee Hodges in third overall entering Tuesday’s final round of play
VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. – The fourth-ranked Alabama men's golf team carded a team total of 16-under par 544 (271-273) and is the clubhouse leader after two rounds of play at the 2017 Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate on Monday.
Playing in warm and humid conditions, the Crimson Tide recorded two of its lowest rounds of the season on Monday, shooting 9-under par in the first round, followed by going 7-under in the afternoon. As a result, Alabama's 544 is the sixth-lowest 36-hole total in program history.
"I am proud of where we are and I think the guys did a really good job out there today," Alabama head coach Jay Seawell said. "We didn't finish great, so we have some things we need to talk about tonight. The final three holes got us a little bit and kept from it being a really special day, but we finished under par for both rounds and I am really proud of them."
Individually, the Tide was led on Monday by junior Lee Hodges, who is in third overall after two rounds of play. The Ardmore, Tenn., native collected a career-low round of 5-under 65 in the second round of play and finished the day with a career-best 36-hole total of 8-under par 132 (67-65).
Hodges will begin the third round just two strokes behind overall leader Mason Overstreet (130) of Arkansas, while Michigan's Kyle Mueller (131) is in second.
Freshman Davis Shore is in a tie for seventh after two rounds of play, giving Alabama two players among the top 10. Shore carded the best rounds of his young career, opening the day with a 69 and followed with a career-best 18-hole score of 3-under 67. The Knoxville, Tenn., native finished with a season-best 36-hole total of 4-under par 136.
Junior Davis Riley (67-71) and senior Steven Setterstrom (68-70) are in a tie for 13th with both carding a 2-under par 138 on the day. Senior Jonathan Hardee rounds out the Crimson Tide golfers in a tie for 40th with a 146 (74-72).
Alabama holds a two-shot lead over seventh-ranked Baylor (546) entering Tuesday's final 18 holes. BYU (551), ranked No. 21 in the nation, is in third, while No. 16 Arkansas (555) and No. 11 Auburn (560) round out the top five teams.
Alabama will tee off the third and final round on Tuesday morning at 8:50 a.m. CT off Hole No. 1. The Tide will be paired alongside Baylor and BYU for the final round of play.
"We just need to know that you have to play them all and have to finish," Seawell said. "We are playing against some great talent so we have to play great. There are a lot of birdies to be made because of the soft conditions on the greens especially, so we just need to keep doing what we do and keep making birdies."
