Davis Shore in a tie for first to lead four Tide golfers among the top 10 after day one
FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The seventh-ranked Alabama men's golf team is in second place after 36 holes played at the 2018 Mason Rudolph Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club South Course. The Crimson Tide opened the event on Friday with a 7-over par 291 and followed that with a 3-under par 281 in the second round to finish at 4-over par 572 on the day.
Alabama, who was one of only two teams in the field to shoot a round below par on the day, trails clubhouse leader No. 46 Liberty, who finished the day at 2-over par 570. Tournament host No. 4 Vanderbilt is in third with a 7-over par 575, while No. 6 Florida (579) and No. 47 Louisville (589) round out the top five, respectively.
Freshman Davis Shore leads the way for the Crimson Tide, as he is in a tie for first overall after 36 holes of play. The Knoxville, Tenn., native matched his season-best round of 67 during the second round to finish the day with a 3-under par 139 (72-67). After carding a 1-over par on the opening 18 holes, Shore ended his day with four birdies, an eagle and two bogeys to finish at 4-under in the second round. He is tied with Vanderbilt's John Augenstein for the lead and is one of five golfers in the field to finish below par through two rounds.
Meanwhile, fellow freshman Wilson Furr opened the tournament with a season-best 18-hole score of 1-under par 70 and followed that with a 2-over par 73 to end the day in a tie for seventh overall with a 1-over par 143.
Senior Jonathan Hardee (72-73) and junior Davis Riley (77-68) both carded a 3-over par 145 and are tied for 10th overall entering Saturday's third round to give the Tide four individuals among the top-10. Senior Lee Hodges rounded out the Tide golfers in 69th position with a 155 (79-76) on the par 71, 7,100-yard layout.
A pair of Tide seniors are playing as individuals this weekend, as Tyler Hitchner (71-76/147) and Steven Setterstrom (74-74/148) are tied for 18th and 21st, respectively.
The tournament's third round is currently slated for an 11 a.m. CT start on Saturday. However, there is a threat for severe weather throughout the day. If the teams cannot play on Saturday, the third round will be postponed until Sunday. If the weather holds off, the 15-team field will play on both Saturday and Sunday, making it a 72-hole tournament instead of a 54-hole event.
