The Crimson Tide led 3-2 before falling 4-3
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – After leading 3-2 the 33rd-ranked Alabama women's tennis team fell in a hear-breaker to No. 28 LSU, 4-3 on Thursday night in the second round of the 2019 SEC Women's Tennis Championships at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas.
With the loss the Crimson Tide drops to 18-11 on the year, while the Tigers move to 16-10 and will advance to the quarterfinals.
"I have to give credit to LSU. The match could've gone either way and they competed hard," head coach Jenny Mainz said. "I thought we had a lot of opportunities in doubles and in singles that we did not capitalize on. We did a tremendous job fighting on every court and we never went away. I'm really proud of these girls and I told them they have a lot to hang their hat on. This is a completely different Alabama team than the one that played LSU back on March 1. We've improved and progressed and I'm proud of their fight and the way they have stayed together as a team."
After several rain delays pushed the match back to the early evening, LSU gained momentum by winning the doubles point at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.
In singles action, the Tigers briefly took the 2-0 advantage after winning in straight-sets on court two. Moments later, junior Ann Selim put the Crimson Tide on the board with her 6-1, 6-1, win over Luba Vasilyuk. Senior Andie Daniell won her eighth-consecutive singles match and tied her career-high with her highest-ranked win after besting No. 8 Eden Richardson, 6-4, 6-2, to tie it up at 2-2. Daniell has won in straight sets in all of her wins against top-125 opponents.
Later in the match, junior Luca Fabian put the Tide on top 3-2 with her 7-5, 6-3 win against Kennan Johnson to swing the momentum in UA's favor. The Tigers had an answer on court four and made it 3-3 with the match coming down to court three. After junior Alba Cortina Pou forced a third set, Taylor Bridges came back to seal the 4-3 win, 7-6(1), 2-6, 6-1.
The Crimson Tide will wait to hear its named called at the 2019 NCAA Tennis Selection Show on Monday, April 29 beginning at 5:30 p.m. CT.
