TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – A total of seven Alabama student-athletes earned a spot on the 2021 CoSIDA Academic All-District IV At-Large teams the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Thursday.
Alba Cortina Pou (women's tennis) earned her second berth on the district team, while swimmers Morgan Liberto, Cade Auerbach, Derek Maas and Nicholas Perera, along with diver Tanesha Lucoe and rower Izzie Gonzales, all earned the accolade for the first time. In addition to earning all-district recognition in 2020, Cortina Pou went on to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. All seven student-athletes now move on to the national Academic All-America At-Large ballot.
Unlike the other Academic All-America teams which represent a single sport, the at-large programs spans several men's and women's sports. The women's at-large team includes beach volleyball, bowling, rowing, field hockey, fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis and water polo, while the men include fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo, volleyball and wrestling. Each school is also limited to just four men and four women nominees.
For the women, Cortina Pou earned her undergraduate degree in finance and marketing with a 4.0 grade point average and maintains a 4.0 GPA while pursuing her MBA. Gonzales carries a 4.0 in political science, while Lucoe has a 4.0 GPA in public relations. Liberto is concurrently pursuing a bachelor's degree in political science and a master's in public administration, through Alabama's Accelerated Masters Program, maintaining a 4.0 GPA in both courses of study.
On the men's side, Auerbach carries a 4.0 GPA while pursuing a double major in finance and economics. Maas, an All-American, holds a 4.0 GPA in biology on the premed track. Perera, an All-American, maintains a 4.0 GPA in mechanical engineering.
The seven at-large honorees bumped Alabama's 2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-District IV honorees to 17 so far this year, with the track and field/cross country team still to be announced. Cortina Pou, Liberto, Auerbach, Maas, Perera, Lucoe and Gonzales join softball's Elissa Brown, Montana Fouts, Bailey Hemphill, Alexis Mack and Kaylee Tow, football's Mac Jones and Landon Dickerson, volleyball's Madelyn St. Germain, women's basketball's Jordan Lewis and baseball's Chase Lee as all-district.
