
Canon Claycomb Extends Lead as Alabama Surges on Moving Day at Watersound Invitational

Claycomb fired a 6-under 66 and holds a six-stroke lead on the field heading into the final 18 holes
PANAMA CITY, Fla. – Alabama men's golfer Canon Claycomb followed Sunday's opening round 67 with a 6-under 66 in Monday's second round of the Waterson Invitational to take a six-stroke lead on the field. Thanks in large part to his performance, the Crimson Tide leaped seven spots up the leaderboard into third overall with a 12-under par 276 on the day.
Alabama's round on Monday total was the second-lowest by any team in the two rounds, helping the Tide move from 10th to third heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes.
In addition to Claycomb's low round, three other UA golfers turned in scores of even-par or better, with Dillon West and JP Cave each carding rounds of 3-under par 69, followed by Charlie Nikitas' even-par 72.
The Watersound Invitational is being contested on the par 72, 7,202-yard Shark's Tooth Golf Course in Panama City, Fla. Florida State University is serving as host for the event.

The Highlights
- Claycomb owns a 6-stroke lead over a trio of golfers at 5-under par, as he will be looking to become the first Crimson Tide golfer to earn medalist honors since Wilson Furr claimed the Shoal Creek Invitational title in April 2019
- The 36-hole total of 11-under par 133 is the lowest of his career
- For the tournament, Claycomb leads the field in par 4 (3.75, -5) and par 5 (4.13, -7), going a combined -12 in 36 holes
- Cave (79-69) and Thomas Ponder (73-75) are tied at 40th overall with matching scores of 4-over par 148
- Cave moved up 20 spots into a tie for 40th by recording his sixth career round in the 60s
- West fired a 3-under par 69, tying his season-best 18-hole total, while Nikitas carded an even par 72
- Both West (80-69) and Nikitas (77-72) are tied for 45th overall at 5-over 145
- Competing as an individual, Simms Abney posted a 1-under par 71, the second-lowest 18-hole total of his Crimson Tide career, and will enter the final round in a tie for 40th overall
The Field
- The Crimson Tide sits in third place heading into Tuesday's final round, with a total of 4-under par 572 (296-276)
- No. 17 Georgia Tech leads the field with a 14-under-par 562 after recording an 11-under-par 285 second round
- The Jackets hold a six-stroke lead over Virginia Tech, who currently sit at 8-under par 286, four strokes ahead of the Tide
- Only seven of the 14 teams competing are currently below par for the event
- No. 33 Alabama is one of 12 teams in the 14-team field ranked in the nation's top 50, including No. 4 North Carolina, No. 6 Arkansas, No. 12 Wake Forest, No. 15 Notre Dame, No. 17 Georgia Tech, No. 26 Clemson, No. 32 Louisville, No. 34 NC State, No. 35 Florida State and No. 37 Virginia
- The 72-person individual field includes 18 of the nation's top 100 golfers, according to Golfstat.com.
Next Round
- The Crimson Tide will tee off the final round Tuesday at 9:40 a.m. CT off hole No. 10
- Alabama will be paired alongside the other members of the top three, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech
