Strong Pitching Performance Not Enough in Baseball’s 2-0 Loss at Top-Ranked Texas

The Longhorns were able to cross one run apiece in the third and fourth innings for the win
AUSTIN, Texas – Alabama baseball came up short on Saturday against No. 1 Texas despite another strong performance on the mound, with the Longhorns claiming a 2-0 win at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Saturday decision clinched the series for UT and moved the Crimson Tide to 5-2 on the season.
Hits were tough to come by for both teams once again, with the Tide out-hitting the Longhorns for a second straight afternoon. Alabama tallied five hits and a walk and was able to reach the leadoff man in the final two innings but could not get on the board. Texas starter Tristan Stevens (2-0) earned the win with 6.0 scoreless frames. Reliever Luke Harrison picked up his first save of the year, working the final 3.0 innings for UT.
Alabama's starter was solid for a second straight game, with Antoine Jean (0-1) suffering the hard-luck loss. Jean allowed two runs on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work. Hunter Furtado followed with 3.0 relief innings, sitting down all nine batters in order, including one punchout.
From Head Coach Brad Bohannon
"Antoine (Jean) did a really good job against an all right-handed lineup, did a really good job locating his changeup for us. I don't believe in moral victories, but I'm really proud of the way we competed. This is the second day in a row that we out-hit Texas, second day in a row we've hit more balls on the barrel and hard. Baseball's not fair, but if we play tomorrow the way that we've played the last two days, then we should have a chance to come out on top."
How It Happened
- B3 | A one-out double put a man in scoring position for the Longhorns. Another double one-out later brought across the game's first run. (1-0, Texas)
- B4 | The Longhorns started the inning with a single and moved the leadoff man to second on a sacrifice bunt. Following another out, UT got an RBI-single to center to add one more. (2-0, Texas)
Postgame Notes
- With his 1-for-4 afternoon, Drew Williamson has recorded a hit in six straight games. Over the streak, the senior is batting .360 (9-25) with three doubles, two home runs, six RBI, four runs scored and a pair of walks.
Alabama and Texas will wrap up the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. The Crimson Tide will send sophomore southpaw Grayson Hitt to the mound while the Longhorns counter with fellow sophomore Tanner Witt, a righty. Fans can catch all the action on the Longhorn Network.
