The Gators opened things up with a four-run sixth to put the game out of reach
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama baseball suffered a 13-6 loss to ninth-ranked Florida on Saturday evening at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The Gators secured series with the win while the Crimson Tide moved to 12-8 overall and 0-2 in Southeastern Conference play.
The two teams traded runs early with Florida pulling away for good in the sixth. The Gators got out to an early lead with Alabama battling back to even things up at five apiece after four. Florida added two in the fifth and put up a four-spot in the sixth to put the game out of reach. The Tide tallied one in seventh with UF adding two in the eighth to make it a 13-6 ballgame, the eventual final. Florida reliever Ryan Slater (2-0) picked up the win, while Alabama reliever Hunter Furtado (2-2) suffered the loss.
Dominic Tamez led the offense for UA with a 3-for-5 effort that included a double and an RBI. Also contributing a multi-hit game were Owen Diodati and Eric Foggo. Diodati went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run while adding a walk, one RBI and two runs scored. Foggo finished 2-for-4 with one run to his name.
From Head Coach Brad Bohannon
"I'm going to give credit to Florida. They're a really good offensive club, and their top-five hitters are as good as anybody's top-five in the country. We just didn't execute enough pitches tonight, and we gave up seven two-out RBIs. For the first half of the game, it was an awesome college baseball game just back-and-forth. Their starter, Brandon Sproat, has a great arm and threw multiple balls at 99 in the first inning, but we were able to get him out of the game early. It was impressive, and I really liked the way that we were competing at the plate. We just didn't execute enough pitches tonight."
How It Happened
- T1 | The Gators struck for a pair of runs, both coming with two down. A two-run home run by Wyatt Langford was followed by a solo homer from BT Riopelle. (3-0, Florida)
- B2 | Jim Jarvis drew a bases-loaded walk to push a run across for the Tide. (3-1, Florida)
- T3 | The inning started with a walk before a single moved the leadoff man to second. After a groundout advanced both runners into scoring position a 6-3 grounder allowed the man from third to score. (4-1, Florida)
- B3 | Zane Denton led off with a walk before Tommy Seidl was hit by a pitch to put two on for Drew Williamson. The Tide first baseman delivered with an RBI-single up the middle to score Denton and move Seidl to third. A double play in the next at-bat killed two but brought in Seidl to make it a one-run ballgame. (4-3, Florida)
- T4 | The Gators came back with a run of their own thanks to three consecutive singles in the inning. (5-3, Florida)
- B4 | A two-run fourth for UA evened things up at five apiece. Three straight singles loaded them up before a fielder's choice from Dominic Tamez scored one. Denton followed with a sacrifice fly to bring in the tying run. (5-5)
- T5 | Langford recorded his second home run of the night with a solo shot to start the fifth. The Gators then added one more thanks to a bases-loaded, two-out walk. (7-5, Florida)
- T6 | Florida added four runs on four hits, including a pair of home runs. (11-5, Florida)
- B7 | Owen Diodati recorded a solo homer. (11-6, Florida)
- T8 | Back-to-back two-out doubles scored one for UF. A single in the next at-bat added one more to widen the gap. (13-6, Florida)
