Hannah Parant cracked Alabama’s top 10 all-time assists list
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Alabama volleyball team (9-7, 1-6 SEC) dropped a five-set thriller to No. 24-ranked Vanderbilt (14-2, 5-2 SEC) at Memorial Gymnasium on Friday night despite recording 12 more kills than the Commodores.
The Crimson Tide opened the match winning the first set, 25-22, before falling in sets two and three to face a 2-1 deficit. Alabama put together a great answer in the fourth set, dominating Vanderbilt, 25-13. In the final set, the Tide played its best fifth set all season, but ultimately fell by just two points, 13-15.
Laney Hennessee and Mya Allen led Alabama in kills, finishing with 16 apiece. Allen hit an impressive .375, contributing to the Crimson Tide's best hitting percentage (.301) in SEC play so far. Kaleigh Palmer also reached double digit kills with 14.
Alabama showed a ton of fight in the fourth and fifth sets and a lot of that had to do with Lily Gervase. She provided great energy for the team and ended the day with seven kills and six blocks.
Despite the result, it was a night to remember for Hannah Parant as she recorded her third straight double-double (52 assists/13 digs). She also passed Kayla Schmidt ('01-'02) for ninth all-time on Alabama's career assists list.
From Head Coach Rashinda Reed
"I think this game was a coin toss. It could have gone either way. This is the lowest margin, we lost by two, so I don't think there really is anything you could have done. Again, it could have gone either way. I'm not disappointed about this match at all. This is probably the best fifth-set match that we've had within the season, and I'm really proud of our ladies."
On the attackers:
"I felt they did a good job of mixing it up, challenging the block and expanding their range. You have young people that are really elevating their volleyball IQ and how they play, and I'm excited because they're actually stepping outside of their comfort zone and making themselves comfortable within their new level of play."
