From Head Coach Rob Vaughn
"(Dylan) Volantis is such a unique look with a high release point and his stuff was just really good tonight. We really struggled taking the ball down, I thought we did a really good job taking some pitches to get that 3-2 count, but he just beat us a lot in that 3-2 count. Whether it was balls in the zone that we just didn't handle, or whether we chased down out of the zone or up out of the zone, but Volantis was just really good and they threw that haymaker early. (Tyler) Fay's fastball was just up a little bit, and then you're down 3-0 before you can even blink. That made Volantis' night a little easier. The story of the game is they just kind of kicked our tail in. They were better at the plate, they were better on the mound. We were clean on defense, but there was some balls in the air where they were some plays we should have made, but at the end of the day we got our tails kicked in tonight and we have a quick turnaround, but that's the beauty of baseball, we have to come back tomorrow ready to go."
How It Happened
- B1 | Aiden Robbins led off the Longhorns half of the inning with a double down the right field line, leading to Carson Tinney's two-run homer to right one batter later. Adrian Rodriguez followed the homer with a single, as a groundout moved him to second. With two outs, Ethan Mendoza lined a base-hit to center, scoring Rodriguez. (3-0, Texas)
- B3 | Tinney, Rodriguez and Anthony Pack Jr. all singled to open the inning, loading the bases with no one out. Mendoza then grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to score Tinney. (4-0, Texas)
- B5 | Pack Jr. blooped a double into left to start the inning and took third after a groundout. Temo Becerra then produced a sacrifice fly to score Pack Jr. (5-0, Texas)
- T6 | After a strikeout, Bryce Fowler singled towards shortstop, with a throwing error on the play advancing him to second. Justin Lebron also managed an infield single, placing runners at the corners. With Lebron stealing, Texas threw back to first, as the throw towards second hit Lebron in the back, as the errant throw allowed Fowler to score. Then, with Lebron in motion towards third, a wild pitch opened a lane for Lebron to take an extra base and touch home. (5-2, Texas)
- B6 | Dariyan Pendergrass singled up the middle with one out and took second on a passed ball. Robbins then doubled into left-center to drive in Pendergrass. Tinney followed with a double of his own one batter later to score Robbins, with Pack Jr. providing a two-out RBI single to plate Tinney. (8-2, Texas)
- B8 | Robbins began the inning with a walk before Tinney was hit by a pitch. After a flyout, Pack Jr. doubled into right-center to score Robbins and move Tinney to third. Mendoza followed Pack Jr. with a sacrifice to deep center, driving in Tinney. (10-2, Texas)
