The Crimson Tide was unable to hold a one-run lead entering the 7th inning
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 11 Alabama baseball (27-13, 8-9 SEC) led 1-0 after six full innings, but No. 4 Texas (30-7, 11-5 SEC) tallied three runs in the 7th, as the Crimson Tide was unable to mount a comeback in Saturday's 3-1 loss at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Zane Adams was brilliant in his 10th start of the spring, tossing 6.0 shutout innings while allowing just five hits and two walks to go with seven strikeouts. After issuing a two-out double in the 2nd, Adams proceeded to retire 10 consecutive hitters before allowing a leadoff single in the 6th. In that same 6th inning, Adams punched out the final batter of the frame, inducing a swing-and-a-miss to win a 10-pitch battle and strand two in scoring position.
Matthew Heiberger (2-2) suffered the loss after being responsible for three runs in the 7th, with the lefty notching only one out before his exit. Sam Mitchell entered the game with the bases loaded and one out, as the tall right-hander saw two inherited runs score before picking up the final out of the inning. Mitchell wasn't responsible for a run over his six batters faced, striking out one over his 1.2 innings.
The Tide offense tallied its only run in its first turn at the plate, with Brady Neal collecting an RBI with a double, Alabama's only extra base-hit. Neal finished 1-for-3 with the two-bagger in addition to a walk. Justin Lebron was also 1-for-3 with one walk, while Brennan Holt contributed a 1-for-3 line. The Alabama lineup totaled a season-low three hits and was struck out a season-high 19 times.
From Head Coach Rob Vaughn
"Zane (Adams) was incredible. He was exactly what we needed. It's a big moment right, a Texas kid coming back to Texas and he's in a big spot in a game we really need, and he just didn't try to do too much. He went out and trusted his stuff and wow he was good today. An unbelievable job to hold that offense scoreless through six. I hate that we couldn't finish it for him, but Zane was absolutely unbelievable."
How It Happened
- T1 | Bryce Fowler started the game with an 11-pitch walk before Justin Lebron singled to left-center. Lebron was thrown out at second trying to extend the single into a double, though Fowler advanced to third with one out. Brady Neal then doubled into right-center, scoring Fowler. (1-0 Alabama)
- B7 | Temo Becerra drew a walk before taking second on a wild pitch. Casey Borba followed a walk of his own two batters later, as Jayden Duplantier then drove in Becerra with a single through the right side. Aiden Robbins then singled up the middle to again load the bases. Carson Tinney broke the tie with another single up the middle, with Jayden Rodriguez punctuating the inning with a sacrifice fly to center. (3-1, Texas)
