Upchurch and Crowther combined to allow just four hits and one run in the victory
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 11 Alabama baseball (28-13, 9-9 SEC) salvaged its series at No. 4 Texas (30-8, 11-6) with a narrow 2-1 win at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The victory snapped a five-game conference losing streak and stands as the Crimson Tide's first win over the Longhorns since 1904.
Myles Upchurch (5-2) was brilliant in the 10th start of his freshman campaign, tossing 5.1 shutout innings. The rookie right-hander allowed just one hit and three walks while striking out four in addition to inducing eight groundball outs. Ashton Crowther was just as effective out of the bullpen, as the southpaw covered the final 3.2 innings to earn his first save as a member of the Tide. Crowther was responsible for only three hits and one run to go with two strikeouts, with the left-hander notching a punchout to strand the tying run at first and end the ballgame.
The Tide lineup did just enough to notch the Sunday win, as Jason Torres was the only man in the Alabama order to produce multiple hits. Torres eventually finished 2-for-3 with a walk and one RBI, as his run-scoring single in the 2nd broke a scoreless tie. Justin Lebron reached base twice, finishing 1-for-4 with a hit-by-pitch, while Brady Neal was 1-for-5, though his double play in the 7th forced in a late insurance run. Luke Vaughn's double in the 6th wound up as Alabama's lone extra-base hit, while Bryce Fowler scored a run as part of his 1-for-5 day.
From Head Coach Rob Vaughn
"A much-needed win. I don't care how we did it, I told them we can win 24-23 or 1-0, it doesn't matter as long as we're on the right side. What an incredible job by our arms. If you look at maybe the last six conference games, we've had five really good starts. We've been in some situations and they've picked us up. We swung the bats and set some innings up a little better today, but we just didn't cash in when we needed to, so those arms were huge for us. What an unbelievable start by Myles Upchurch and Ashton Crowther, he gets in a 3-1 count to the last guy and just executes a huge 3-2 pitch to get the punchout, so the pitchers were outstanding this weekend. We've got some work to do but at the end of the day, when you're kind of scuffling a little bit, finding a way to win matters and this will end up being a big one for us."
How It Happened
- T2 | After consecutive outs to begin the inning, Luke Vaughn reached on a hit-by-pitch, with Peyton Steele following him with a hard single to left. Jason Torres then drove in Vaughn with a sharp single up the middle. (1-0, Alabama)
- T7 | Bryce Fowler led off the inning with a single to left-center, while Justin Lebron's single up the middle one batter later pushed Fowler to third. Brady Neal then bounced into a 6-4-3 double play, bringing in Fowler. (2-0, Alabama)
- B9 | Anthony Pack Jr. doubled to left-center with one out and was driven in one pitch later, as Ethan Mendoza lined the first pitch he saw into center for a base-hit. (2-1, Alabama)

- Brady Neal extended his on-base streak to 32 games
