The Crimson Tide committed three errors in the 1st, including five total on Tuesday
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – No. 13 Alabama baseball (28-14) was unable to overcome an eventual nine-run deficit, as five Crimson Tide errors played a role in Tuesday's 11-2 loss to UAB (26-15). The Tide was responsible for three errors in the 1st, an inning that saw the Blazers create a quick 7-0 lead.
Luke Smyers (0-1) was tasked with his second start of the season and recorded just one out in his brief appearance. Smyers was on the hook for three hits, six runs (five earned), one walk and two hit batters over his seven batters faced. The remainder of the Tide bullpen was mostly effective, as JT Blackwood, Connor Lehman, Owen Sarna, Austin Morris, Joe Chiarodo and Zach Kittrell combined to allow only eight hits and two earned runs over the game's final 8.2 innings.
Offensively, John Lemm drove in Alabama's only two runs with a two-run homer in the 6th. Luke Vaughn recorded a double as part of a 1-for-3 night, while Justin Lebron, Brady Neal and Will Plattner managed one hit apiece.
From Head Coach Rob Vaughn
"You show up flat and sloppy against a bad team, you lose. You show up flat and sloppy against a really good team, and they kick your tail. And that's what happened tonight. Just a myriad of different things, and ultimately, that's my job. My responsibility as a head coach is to make sure our team is hooked in and ready to play for 56 games in the regular season and beyond, and we clearly weren't tonight, so that that falls on me. I know these kids will get ripped for it. That's what happens. But ultimately, that's my job. So, any of that needs to be directed at me because I didn't have them in a good spot to play today."
How It Happened
- T1 | JP Head drew a one-out walk and took third following a two-base error on a failed pickoff attempt. Landon Beaver and Max Price were then both plunked to load the bases with one out. Then, Brady Waugh dropped a single into left, scoring Head. One batter later, Andrew Hunt managed a base-hit into center to score Beaver, with an error in center allowing Price to also cross the plate. After Wesley Helms singled to load the bases, Alex Dupuy lined a single off Justin Lebron's glove, leading to two more runs. With runners at first and second, a sacrifice bunt attempt was thrown away, leading to two additional runs. (7-0, UAB)
- T4 | Baylor Roberts drew a leadoff walk, and on a hit-and-run, Kevin Hall Jr. lined a single through the right side, placing runners at the corners with no one out. Head then singled into right to plate Roberts, with a bobble in right field allowing Hall Jr. to also score. (9-0, UAB)
- B6 | Brady Neal singled to open the inning, though he was erased after Eric Hines bounced into a fielder's choice. John Lemm then drove in Hines with a two-run homer to right-center. (9-2, UAB)
- T7 | Hunt led off with a single to left, with Dupuy driving him in with a double down the right field line while an error in right pushed Dupuy to third. Roberts then plated Dupuy with a sacrifice bunt. (11-2, UAB)
