The Crimson Tide’s nine-game winning streak was snapped with the defeat
NORMAN, Okla. – No. 16 Alabama baseball (24-8, 7-4 SEC) was stymied by No. 11 Oklahoma (21-9, 5-6, SEC), as the Crimson Tide was defeated 4-2 at Kimrey Family Stadium on Friday. The loss snapped Alabama's nine-game winning streak and seven-game conference winning streak.
Zane Adams (4-2) suffered his second loss of the season, though he gave the Tide a solid effort. Adams was responsible for four runs on six hits and three walks, mixing in seven strikeouts over his 5.0 innings. Austin Morris was brilliant out of the bullpen, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings, including four strikeouts. Luke Smyers scattered a hit in his lone scoreless frame in the 8th.
Oklahoma starter Cameron Johnson was tough to maneuver across the southpaw's 6.1 innings, limiting the Tide to eight singles and two runs. One day after producing his first multi-homer game, Bryce Fowler closed 3-for-4 with an RBI. Jason Torres also managed multiple hits, going 2-for-4. Justin Lebron was 1-for-4, scoring a run on a wild pitch, with Brady Neal, and Luke Vaughn also providing base-hits.
From Head Coach Rob Vaughn
"That's the best version you get of Cam Johnson. I talked to a lot of coaches coming in and it's like a million heaters and you're just not going to hit it. It's a tough, tough pitch, it's 96, 98 with like 20 inches of run, it just depends on whether he's in the zone or not. Credit to him, he was in the zone a lot, he made some really big pitches in some big spots. I think Zane Adams did exactly what we needed him to do which is give us a chance and hold them at bay. There were some little moments in that game, and we needed to win some of those moments. We had a play in right field in the two-run third with the wind whipping and it wasn't an easy play, but it stays in the yard it's got to be caught, and it turns into a double. Zane did an incredible job minimizing the damage and only holding them to two runs. Austin Morris and Luke Smyers, both had outstanding stuff to give our offense a chance. We had a runner at third base with less than two outs twice, and we had another situation with a chance to cash in a run with two outs and just didn't get it done. Got to credit Oklahoma for making some big pitches in some big spots, and the last three weeks we've been on the right side of getting that big hit, and just didn't do it today."
How It Happened
- T1 | With one out, Justin Lebron singled to third base, with an overthrow on the play placing Lebron at second. A passed ball moved him to third before a wild pitch saw Lebron cross the plate. (1-0, Alabama)
- B2 | Alex Blair drew a one-out walk, with Drew Dickerson succeeding him with a base-hit to put two men on. After a flyout, Jason Walk blooped a single into center to score Blair. (1-1)
- B3 | The Sooners opened the inning with two hits and a hit-by-pitch, loading the bases. Camden Johnson eventually scored on a wild pitch, while Deiten LaChance lifted a sacrifice fly to score the second run of the inning. (3-1, Oklahoma)
- B4 | Kyle Branch drew a walk as the leadoff man, with Walk dropping down a bunt single to reach base. A sac bunt moved both men into scoring position, leading to Johnson's RBI groundout. (4-1, Oklahoma)
- T7 | Luke Vaughn lined a one-out single to left, with Brennan Holt following him with a hit-by-pitch. Bryce Fowler's third hit of the game drove in Vaughn, a single through the right side. (4-2, Oklahoma)
