Zane Adams provided 6.0 scoreless innings to secure the series victory
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – No. 24 Alabama baseball (31-16, 12-11 SEC) was guided by a superlative start from Zane Adams, as the Crimson Tide cemented the series win following a 5-0 victory over Vanderbilt (27-21, 10-13 SEC) on Friday at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
Adams (5-3) picked up his fifth win of the season in front of the home crowd, holding the Commodores to just eight hits across 6.0 shutout innings. Adams was responsible for only one walk while adding six strikeouts to his ledger, with all eight of his surrendered hits resulting in singles. Ashton Crowther tossed the final 3.0 innings for the Tide, as the fellow southpaw scattered a base-hit while not allowing a run to earn his second save of the spring.
Alabama scored all five of its runs over the game's first three innings, highlighted by a three-run 1st. Eric Hines homered for the second consecutive day in the opening frame, launching a two-run home run into the visitor's bullpen. Hines eventually finished 2-for-4, later contributing an RBI single. Last night's walk-off hero, John Lemm followed Hines' two-run blast with a solo homer of his own to punctuate the three-run inning. Jason Torres was 1-for-2 with an RBI, as the Tide third basemen worked a base-loaded walk. Justin Lebron and Bryce Fowler were both 2-for-4, with both men collecting doubles as part of their respective lines.
From Head Coach Rob Vaughn
Yeah, a great win. I think it all starts with Zane (Adams). Just an incredible job on the mound, executing pitches. That's a dangerous offense. We talked about that a little bit yesterday and what they've done. There's some thunder at the top of the order. They got guys that can really hit and thought he just did a really good job establishing the heater today. I think all the other stuff just played really well. Executed some fastballs and some huge counts. Really everything was kind of working and executing pitches in big spots. And, obviously, (Eric Hines) hits a big homer, has another RBI later, just a really good job. Like, the big challenge is, you move up to 12:30, it's a rainy day, it's not great weather, we were going to have to kind of create our own energy today, and it started with Zane on the mound. Eric Hines gives us a big swing, (John) Lemm follows it up with a homer in the first. So, a three spot and then a zero after it. Zane just kept getting better as the day went. So, really good win for us. Now we got to come out and get rested up, and it'll be good to kind of have the rest of the evening to kind of recover and get out here for a big one tomorrow.
How It Happened
- B1 | With two outs, Bryce Fowler shot a base-hit through a vacated left side of the infield. The next batter, Eric Hines launched a two-run home run the other way. After Hines, John Lemm then connected on a solo homer to right. (3-0, Alabama)
- B3 | Justin Lebron opened the inning with a double into the left-center gap and took third after a bobble by the Vanderbilt centerfielder. Brady Neal then drew a walk, leading to Hines' RBI single to left. Lemm succeeded Hines with a free pass, loading the bases. Jason Torres then drew a four-pitch walk to bring in Neal. (5-0, Alabama)
