TUSCALOOSA - The University of Alabama volleyball plays its final two regular season matches this week beginning on Wednesday with a match against in-state rival Auburn at 7 p.m. in the CAVE
The Crimson Tide, 15-12 overall and 9-5 in the Southeastern Conference, has already captured a second place finish in the SEC West and is looking to earn the No. 3 seed at next week's SEC Championship tournament with a pair of wins. Alabama is riding a program record six-match win streak in SEC play and hopes to extend its current win streak against the Tigers to eight matches after earning a 3-0 win on Oct. 15 in Auburn.
Wednesday night's match has been dubbed "Cram the CAVE" night as the Tide seeks to host a record crowd in the recently renovated CAVE facility. The Alabama single match attendance record is 533 set on Nov. 9, 1999 in a match versus Auburn. In the first meeting of the season between these two rivals, Auburn drew a UA-AU series record 848 fans.
Promotions for the match include free Game Day T-shirts to the first 500 fans along with free chicken sandwiches for 500. In match give-a-ways include chances for free unleaded gas and other items. Admission is also free to the event.
Members of the Student Athlete Advisory Board will be at the gates collecting canned food items as part of the Beat Auburn/Beat Hunger food drive competition. Alabama fans are encouraged to bring a food item with them to the match on Wednesday.
"Alabama versus Auburn in any sport is always exciting," said UA head coach Judy Green. "Wednesday night will be no different. We are counting on all the Crimson Tide faithful to come out to the CAVE and help us defeat the Tigers. When we went to Auburn earlier this year, they had a loud and large crowd, but I know we can have one that's louder and larger on Wednesday night. I'm also encouraging everyone to bring a canned food item with them. This is important not only to help us win the collection competition, but also because these items can make the holiday season better for people in our community."
Following the Auburn match, Alabama will conclude their regular season schedule on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. against LSU. The match marks the final home appearance for Tide seniors Erin Price and Jennifer Bibber, who will be honored in a ceremony at the match.
