The University of Alabama softball team had a successful ending to its 2004 fall season posting two run-rule victories in the season ending Fall Brawl!
The Tide defeated the Central Alabama Lady Trojans 9-1 in five innings and the Shelton State Lady Bucs 8-0 also in five innings while sandwiching a 1-0 loss to the Wallace-Dothan Governers in between.
Alabama head coach Patrick Murphy got what he wanted out of the three games getting an opportunity to see his three pitchers against live hitting as well as his freshman class.
“I thought all three pitchers had good outings,” said Murphy. “All three kept us in the game except for one mistake in the second game. That’s just the way fast pitch is, one mistake can cost you. I thought (freshman) Dani Woods was outstanding and Katie Johnson was very good.”
The Crimson Tide pitching staff posted a 0.00 ERA through 17.0 innings, striking out 25 batters while holding the opposition to a .169 batting average.
Johnson and Stephanie VanBrakle led the team offensively, each posting a .600 batting average (Johnson, 3-for-5; VanBrakle, 3-for-5). Johnson, who caught in the third game, also picked a runner off first in the Tide’s victory over Shelton State.
Woods led the team with four RBI, hitting .500 (3-for-6) with a triple, home run and a 1.333 slugging percentage. She was a double short of the cycle in Bama’s victory over Central Alabama.
Capper Reed hit .500 (2-for-4) with a triple, home run and three runs scored while posting a 1.750 slugging percentage.
As a team, Alabama was five-for-six in stolen bases.
The Crimson Tide will take the next week off before hitting the field again with individual workouts through the end of the semester.
Alabama will open the 2005 season on February 4 when the team hosts the 2005 Bama Bash!
