
Volleyball Falls to No. 15 Tennessee in Straight Sets

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - In the final home match of the 2011 season, the Alabama Crimson Tide volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (17-25, 14-25, 13-25) Southeastern Conference loss to the No. 15 ranked Tennessee Lady Vols on Sunday afternoon from Foster Auditorium. With the loss, Alabama falls to 11-18 overall and 4-14 in SEC play. The Lady Vols improve to 24-3 overall and 16-1 in conference play.
In the final home match of the 2011 season, Alabama was held to a .125 hitting percentage, as Leigh Moyer led the Tide with eight kills on 12 attempts for a .583 hitting mark. Kayla Fitterer and Andrea McQuaid added six kills each and Stephanie Riley had 23 assists and a team-high seven digs in her final home match of her career. In the first season back in Foster Auditorium since 1995, UA posted a 7-7 record in 14 matches at home this season.
Tennessee finished the match with a .433 hitting percentage, as Kelly Robinson and DeeDee Harrison had 12 kills each to share match-high honors. Robinson finished with a double-double as she had a match-high 12 digs, while Harrison hit .733 (12-1/15) on the afternoon. Mary Pollmiller had a match-high 35 assists to go along with six kills and a .455 hitting percentage.
In the opening set of the match, the score was tied at 12-12 before Tennessee scored five straight points to open a 17-12 advantage. A kill by Fitterer helped cut the deficit to 16-19, but the Lady Vols closed the set by winning six of seven points for a 25-17 victory.
Tennessee took full control of the match with a 25-14 victory in the second set, behind a .419 hitting percentage. The Tide hit .074 in the middle frame, connecting for six kills on 27 attempts. In the third set, Alabama was held to a .100 hitting percentage as the Lady Vols posted four of their seven blocks in the final set. UT hit .429 with 15 kills in the third set, as Harrison tallied five of her kills in the match's final frame.
In its only match next week, Alabama continues SEC play on Sunday, Nov. 20 when it travels to Starkville, Miss., to take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs at 1:30 p.m. CT.
