Alabama Softball Sweeps Alabama State in Sunday Doubleheader

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama softball continued its fall slate with a strong showing in a doubleheader against Alabama State Sunday afternoon at Rhoads Stadium. The Tide defeated the Hornets 9-0 in game one and 14-0 in game two.
Sydney Littlejohn threw a complete-game shutout in the opening game of the doubleheader, striking out eight batters while allowing just three hits. Chandler Dare scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first, beating a tag attempt at home, and Bailey Hemphill made it a 3-0 game with a two-run home run later in the inning. In the second, Elissa Brown scored from second on an RBI single by Dare, who later came around to score on an RBI single by Merris Schroder. An RBI double by Sydney Booker in the third made it 6-0 and Brown drove her in with an RBI single to make it 7-0. Hemphill tallied the final two runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth with her second long ball of the day, a two-run shot to make it 9-0.
In the first inning of game two, Brown crossed the plate first on an RBI double by Mari Cranek. Later in the inning with runners at the corners, a double steal allowed Dare to score from third and make it 2-0. With runners at first and third again in the second inning, Rachel Bobo drove in one on an RBI single and, following a single by Brown, Cranek hit a sacrifice fly to score Gabby Callaway from third and make it 4-0. An RBI single by Marisa Runyon made it 5-0 after two innings and the Tide offense broke the game open in the third, scoring nine runs with eight different runners scoring. The inning was highlighted by a two-run double for Runyon, an RBI double by Claire Jenkins and RBI singles by Callaway and Bobo. Madi Moore threw 4.0 shutout innings while Alexis Osorio struck out the side in the top of the fifth.
Next up, Alabama concludes its fall schedule with a doubleheader against Wallace-Hanceville on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 1:30 p.m. CT at Rhoads Stadium.
