The Crimson Tide was led by three seniors scoring in double figures
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama women's basketball team pulled away from Jacksonville in the second half to secure the 75-60 win in the annual 5th Grade Fastbreak game on Thursday afternoon in Coleman Coliseum.
The Crimson Tide (3-0) bench outscored the Dolphins' (1-2) bench, 36-15, in the win.
"I want to start by thanking all the fifth graders and fast breakers that were here today and Tuscaloosa County and Tuscaloosa City Schools for their support of this event," said head coach Kristy Curry. "Throughout the course of the season, and even the months to follow from today, our team will continue to go out to the county and city schools and encourage, help and be a part of their curriculums. We really appreciate the support of this event, and I think sometimes we have to realize that those young ones that were in the gym today maybe have never been to campus, or have never seen a live basketball game at this level. It's just a great opportunity, and I asked our team today to understand their energy and effort because it can impress all these little eyes watching, and those kids can take that back to their everyday lives and work and study hard and compete in their everyday lives."
Senior Ashley Williams earned her 13th career double-double, finishing the game with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Hannah Cook fell just one rebound short of a double-double, with 14 points and nine rebounds. Senior Alana da Silva had herself a game, scoring a career-high 12 points in 24 minutes off the bench.
With the Tide holding the 35-33 advantage coming out of halftime, the two teams traded baskets for the majority of the third quarter before UA went on an 8-0 run to extend its lead to double-digits with 57 seconds remaining in the frame.
At the start of the fourth, the Tide quickly extended its lead to 15 points after going on a 7-0 run in the first 2:36 of the period. Alabama closed out the game with stellar shooting from Cook, Williams and senior Meoshonti Knight to keep the Dolphins at bay.
The Tide shot 48 percent (28-of-58) from the floor, while holding the Dolphins to just 33 percent shooting. Alabama also controlled the glass, outrebounding Jacksonville, 43-34.
"I am really proud of our team, and I thought Jacksonville came out and shot the ball really well," added Curry. "I think they're well-coached and a team that, come March, will be a great game for our RPI, and they are going to have a chance to have a really successful season."
The Tide will return to action for its first road contest of the season against Georgia Southern on Sunday Nov. 19, at 1 p.m. CT in Statesboro, Ga.
