Alabama Hosts Army West Point in Fifth Annual Bush Cup

The two teams will play a head-to-head Ryder Cup-style of event on Tuesday at Shoal Creek Club
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The No. 21-ranked Alabama men's golf team will host Army West Point for the fifth-annual Bush Cup – a single-day head-to-head competition that features alternate ball play in the morning and match play competition in the afternoon. The event will be played on Tuesday on the par 72, 7,154-yard Shoal Creek Club in Birmingham, Ala., and is free to the general public.
The event will begin with 18 holes of alternate ball in the morning that will feature four groups in all. Tee times are set for 7:30 a.m. CT. Following a break for lunch, the teams will square off in match play that will feature nine groups of head-to-head competition. In each event, the groups that are victorious will receive one point for their respective team and a tie will count for ½ of a point. The first team to reach 7 points will win the event.
Tournament Info
- The Bush Cup was established in 2015 to "promote collegiate sports and inspire athletes to strive for personal excellence as well as service to our country as exemplified by the life of President George H.W. Bush." President Bush was honored by the dedication of the event and stated, "Not only will the tournament bear my name, but more importantly it recognizes service to country ... I am proud to be part of what I am sure will be a hugely successful annual event."
- The inaugural Bush Cup was contested at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y., between Army West Point and Yale, President Bush's alma mater. In 2016, Army West Point faced Northwestern at Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Illinois. Stanford hosted the Bush Cup in 2017 at the famed Olympic Club in San Francisco, while SMU welcomed the cadets last season at the Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas

- The Crimson Tide is coming off a fifth-place finish in the season-opening Carpet Capital Collegiate, which was played at The Farm Golf Club in Dalton, Ga., on Sept. 6-8 Three Alabama golfers finished among the top 20 to lead the Crimson Tide throughout the three-day, 72-hole event. As a team, UA finished with a score of 883 (296-289-298)
- Sophomore Frankie Capan III, junior Wilson Furr and freshman Thomas Ponder led the way with all three finishing among the top-20 in the field
- Capan led the Tide as he closed the event tied for 12th overall with a three-day total of 2-over par 218 (76-69-73). It marks the fifth top-20 finish of his career and the fourth time he's closed an event among the top-15 individuals
- Furr finished a stroke back of Capan as he tied for 15th overall with a 3-over par 219 (72-71-76). It was his 10th career top-20 finish
- Ponder, playing in his first collegiate tournament, had a solid performance as he tied for 18th overall with a 4-over 220 (73-72-75) on the par 72, 7,180-yard Farm Club Golf Course

- Following the Bush Cup, the Tide will travel to Olympia Fields Country Club just outside of Chicago, Ill., to compete in the challenging Olympia Fields Fighting Illini Invitational on Sept. 20-22
