The Crimson Tide advanced four singles players to Friday’s Round of 32
BATON ROUGE, La. – Four Alabama men's tennis players captured singles wins in the opening round of the ITA Southern Regional Championships main draw Thursday.
Zach Foster, Damien Nezar, Matias Ponce De Leon and Andrii Zimnokh secured their spot in the Round of 32 after downing their opening round singles match. Additionally, all three doubles pairs advanced to the Round of 32 thanks to a trio of first-round byes.
The Match
- Both Zach Foster and Matias Ponce De Leon posted come-from-behind wins in their opening-round match
- Foster dropped the first set, 6-4, to Alabama State's Alexandre Verlaguet, before battling to take the next set at 6-1
- Foster would rally to claim a back-and-forth third set at 7-5 to move to the next round
- Ponce De Leon traded games in the opening set before falling 7-3 in a tiebreaker
- After claiming a 7-5 victory in another competitive set, the UA junior fought his way to a dominant 6-2 victory in round three
- Andrii Zimnokh downed Leonard Tramolay from Louisiana in two sets with a 6-2, 6-3 victory
- Damian Nezar cruised to a 6-1 win in round one against Ole Miss' Benjamin Martin before posting a 6-2 win in the second set

- All three doubles pairings will compete in the Round of 32 Friday, with competition beginning at 9 a.m. CT
- Singles competition will begin at 11 a.m. with Foster, Ponce De Leon, Nezar and Zimnokh set to compete in the Round of 32
