Ponce De Leon, Zimnokh Advance to Singles Quarterfinals, Three Doubles Teams Advance at ITA Southern Regional Championships

Matias Ponce De Leon and Andrii Zimnokh earned a spot in the singles quarterfinals after recording a pair of wins as all three doubles duos went undefeated during the day’s events
BATON ROUGE, La. – Matias Ponce De Leon and Andrii Zimnokh advanced to the singles quarterfinals at the ITA Southern Regional Championships while all three Alabama doubles pairing earned a spot in the Round of 16.
Ponce De Leon and Zimnokh both secured a pair of singles wins to earn a spot in the top eight, battling through the Round of 32 and 16 during Friday's competition. Additionally, Ponce De Leon, with doubles partner Carlos Gimenez-Perez, and Zimnokh, with partner Zach Foster, recorded a win in doubles action to advance in the draw. Roan Jones and Damien Nezar also won their doubles matchup as Alabama went undefeated in paired play.
The Match
- Ponce De Leon battled through two tiebreakers and a third set in his Round of 32 match against Nicolas Smikn, defeating the singles player from Troy 7-6(1), 6-7(3), 6-2
- He would face LSU's Aleksi Lofman in the Round of 16, winning the first set before securing the overall victory after Lofman retired
- Zimnokh dropped just two games in his Round of 32 match against Luc Hoeijmans from Tulane
- Zimnokh blanked Hoeijmans in the opening set, recording a 6-0, 6-2 victory
- In the Round of 16, Zimnokh captured a two-set, 6-2, 6-4 win over UAB's Noah Malige to earn a spot in the quarterfinals
- In doubles action, Nezar and Jones battled David Krasner and Matei Palcau from Jacksonville State to an 8-6 victory
- Gimenez-Perez and Ponce De Leon topped Charlie Burdell and Steven Rice of Tulane, while Zimnokh and Foster defeated Matias Amier and Alexandre Verlaguet from Alabama State as both matches were decided by an 8-3 result
- Additionally, Foster posted a three-set win (6-2, 3-6, 6-0) against ULL's Oriol Fallat Gimenez in the Round of 32 but fell to MSU's Petar Jovanovic (6-2, 7-6(4)) in the Round of 16
- Nezar would defeat South Alabama's Juan Accossatto (7-6(2), 6-1) in his first match of the day before falling to Mario Martinez Serrano of Mississippi State (6-4, 6-1)
- Roan Jones (UA) downed Troy's Vicente Arbelaez (7-5, 7-5) and Carlos Gimenz Perez (UA) topped Troy's Hiiro Sakamoto (7-5, 6-3) in consolation matches
