TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – With the conclusion of the 2024 Athletes Unlimited Softball championship season Sunday, Alabama softball alum Haylie McCleney will retire from the sport following a decade competing with Team USA, a number of years in the professional ranks and a record-setting run with the Crimson Tide from 2013-16.
A native of Morris, Ala., and graduate of Mortimer Jordan High School, McCleney was a four time All-American at Alabama from 2013-16, helping lead the Tide to a 2014 SEC regular season championship and a trio of Women's College World Series appearances. She is the program's career leader in batting average (.447), on base percentage (.569) and triples (16) and is also ranked in the top three in runs scored (2nd – 279), walks (2nd – 199), stolen base percentage (2nd - .994), doubles (3rd – 57) and total bases (3rd – 483).
McCleney earned a spot on the USA Junior National Team in 2013 before making the USA National Team roster in 2014, a position she would maintain for the next decade. She competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, taking home a silver medal while leading the field with a .529 batting average on nine hits across six games.
2024 marked McCleney's fifth year with Athletes Unlimited, earning four All-Defensive Team accolades and finishing as high as third in leaderboard points during the 2022 championship season. She earned her 100th career hit this season, becoming the fourth AU player to surpass the milestone.
