The Crimson Tide takes its first shutout loss of the year
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Fifth-ranked Alabama and Florida battled through 88 scoreless rainy minutes Thursday evening in Gainesville before the Gators took the lead in the 89th minute, holding on to hand the Crimson Tide its first SEC loss of the season, 1-0.
Alabama (12-2-0, 5-1-0 SEC) and Florida (6-4-3, 2-2-2 SEC) fought through a scoreless first half, with the Gators holding an 8-5 advantage in shots as the Crimson Tide failed to take a lead into halftime for the first time this year in conference play. Both teams had their opportunities in the second half, but neither registered a shot on goal until the 89th minute when Florida's Lena Bailey found the right side of the net to give the Gators the late lead, which the home team held to hand the Crimson Tide its first SEC loss of the season.
From Head Coach Wes Hart
"It was a disappointing result tonight, but I'm still proud of our team. I thought we competed and played well, particularly in the second half. Florida is a good team and very good at keeping possession. I thought we did a good job of disrupting their game plan and turning them over in their defensive half, which led to some good chances for us. Unfortunately, we were not able to take advantage of those chances tonight. We've been good all year at finding ways to win, but tonight we couldn't make it happen. I look forward to getting back home for three consecutive home games starting with a tough Georgia team next Friday."
