Alabama Earns All-America Honors in Two Events to Open NCAA Championships

Leonardo Alcantara and the 200 medley relay team scored points for the Tide while capturing All-America honors on the opening day
ATLANTA - Alabama opened the Men's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships Wednesday with Leonardo Alcantara and the 200 medley relay team earning All-America honors.
Alcantara used a career-best time to move up 10 spots in the 1650 freestyle and earn the Tide's first All-America accolade of the week with an 11th-place finish.
The 200 medley relay team followed as Tommy Hagar, Steijn Louter, Sean Niewold and Tim Korstanje captured a season-best performance to climb 13 spots and claim second-team honors off a 16th-place finish.
After the first day of competition, Alabama is in 20th place with eight points.
Meet Notes
- Alcantara's time was a career best as he dropped nearly four seconds off his season best (14:50.00) and over a second off his prior PR (14:45.45)
- Alcantara entered the meet as the 21st seed before climbing to 11th place to earn Second Team All-America honors
- The men's team of Tommy Hagar, Steijn Louter, Sean Niewold and Tim Korstanje bettered their season best in the 200 medley relay by seven-tenths of a second
- The performance moved the quartet from 29th place to 16th in the event
