TUSCALOOSA, Ala.- The University of Alabama volleyball team hosts a pair of matches this weekend in the CAVE with the team squaring off against Kentucky Friday at 7:00 p.m. in the fifth annual "Cram the CAVE," before facing off against Tennessee Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
This weekend's matches starts the second half of conference play for the SEC with Florida in first place with a 9-1 record and Alabama, Ole Miss, LSU and Kentucky sharing the second place spot with a 7-3 conference record.
"Kentucky and Tennessee are two of the hottest teams in the SEC at present," said Alabama head coach Judy Green. "They are both coming off great home weekends where they both knocked off then No. 18 LSU."
At the conclusion of the first half of the SEC, Alabama moved back into first place in the conference in digs per game, averaging 18.03. All-American middle blocker Crystal Hudson remains in first place in hitting percentage with .424 on the season and freshman Mary Catherine Aune still leads the conference in aces per game with .59. Aune has accumulated 39 aces in the first 10 matches.
The Crimson Tide closed the series gap with Kentucky on opening weekend after Alabama defeated the Wildcats 3-2 in Lexington. The Tide now trails the Wildcats 11-17 all-time.
Against Tennessee, Alabama swept the Lady Vols in the conference opener in Knoxville and moved to 11-22 all-time.
"I like how our team has looked during practice this week," said Green. "They are fresh and they seem to have narrowed their focus even more as we begin the second round of SEC play. This is a fun, athletic weekend on our campus and we are expecting huge crowds for both matches. We know we will have to come to play if we want to be successful."
