LEXINGTON, Ky. – Alabama volleyball fell in its Sunday road contest against 11th-ranked Kentucky, dropping straight sets 16-25, 19-25 and 23-25.
After Alabama (18-10, 5-9 SEC) dropped the first two sets to Kentucky (19-4, 13-0 SEC), the Crimson Tide held the lead for the majority of the third, but a late push from the Wildcats ultimately gave the home team the two-point set victory to cap the sweep. Returning to her hometown, sophomore Doris Carter led the offense with 12 kills and a .344 hitting percentage, adding 15 digs for her eighth double-double of the season, six of which have come in SEC play. Neither team scored consecutive points in the first set until a kill and block from Kentucky put the home team ahead 7-6. Those points started a 6-1 run as the Wildcats moved further ahead, 11-7. The home team was up by five at the media timeout, 15-10, and held the same margin at the Tide's first timeout, 18-13. Kentucky extended its lead to 21-14 and Alabama spent its final timeout. The Wildcats closed out the frame with a 4-2 run to win, 25-16.
The Wildcats scored five unanswered to start the second frame, forcing the Tide to burn an early timeout. Kentucky added another before Alabama scored back-to-back points, including an overturned call on a challenge. With the Wildcats ahead 12-5, the Tide scored four in a row and Kentucky called a timeout with its lead trimmed to 12-9. Alabama continued to battle, eventually making another 4-0 run to tie the set at 15-15. The Tide briefly moved in front, 18-17, but the Wildcats quickly retook the lead and Alabama spent its final timeout trailing 20-18. Kentucky closed out the frame with a 5-1 run to win, 25-19, and take a 2-0 match lead.
