The Crimson Tide hit three home runs to secure the series victory in Columbia
COLUMBIA, S.C. – No. 19 Alabama baseball (34-17, 15-11 SEC) produced three home runs on Saturday, as the Crimson Tide leaned on the longball in a 9-6 win against South Carolina (22-29, 7-19 SEC) at Founders Park.
Will Plattner, who entered the game off the bench in replacement of Brady Neal, finished 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a walk. John Lemm was 1-for-5, though his lone hit resulted in a three-run home run, with the big lefty also driving in a run with an RBI fielder's choice. Jojo Williamson connected on a three-run home run as part of a 2-for-3 day, while Eric Hines managed a 3-for-4 afternoon, adding a walk. Peyton Steele also collected three hits in four at-bats, with Bryce Fowler closing 2-for-5 with a double. In total, the Tide recorded 14 total hits and four extra-base hits on Saturday.
Zane Adams (6-3) earned the win after his 13th start of the spring, lasting for 6.0 innings while surrendering six hits and five runs and one walk to go with nine strikeouts. Adams allowed four runs in the 2nd, though rebounded to retire 13 of the next 15 hitters he faced. Matthew Heiberger scattered two hits and a walk over 2.0 scoreless innings, while Hagan Banks saw a sacrifice fly cross the plate before notching the final three outs to finalize the win.
From Head Coach Rob Vaughn
"Zane (Adams) gave us everything we needed. He wasn't as sharp as normal and didn't command the heater great, but he does what Zane does and gets us through the sixth. He did a good job of executing pitches when he needed to and setting the tone. Just a great job by the offense, it was one of those next-man-up things. Jojo (Williamson) gets the start today and arguably takes the biggest swing of the day on a changeup and ties the game after (South Carolina) had some momentum. You never know when your number's going to be called and not only did (Will Plattner) do a really good job taking some big swings at the plate, but did a really good job behind the plate for a guy that hadn't caught a lot this year. I thought he was outstanding on both sides of the ball today. Really good stuff from those guys, a really good win, and now we have to get rested, recover and come back out and finish the weekend tomorrow."
How It Happened
- T1 | Bryce Fowler led off the game with a soft single to left before Eric Hines rolled a base-hit through the right side, placing men on the corners with one out. John Lemm then drove in Fowler with a fielder's choice at second. (1-0, Alabama)
- B2 | Dawson Harman opened the inning with a double, but consecutive flyouts saw him remain at second with two outs. After Ethan Lizama drew a walk, Jake Randolph lifted a three-run home run to left-center. Luke Yuhasz followed the home run with a single up the middle, eventually stealing second. Yuhasz then scored after KJ Scobey's triple to center. (4-1, South Carolina)
- T4 | Jason Torres worked a leadoff walk before Peyton Steele managed an infield single with two outs. Then, Jojo Williamson launched a three-run home run to right to level the score. (4-4)
- T5 | Will Plattner singled hard to right field to start the inning, with Hines following him with a single of his own through the right side. Lemm then pulverized a three-run home run to right to regain the lead for the Tide. (7-4, Alabama)
- T6 | With one out, Fowler blooped a double to shallow center, leading to Plattner's two-run homer to left one batter later. (9-4, Alabama)
- B6 | Patrick Evans sent a two-out, solo home run to left. (9-5, Alabama)
- B9 | Randolph drew a leadoff walk before Yuhasz doubled down the right field line to put two men in scoring position. Scobey then drove in Randolph with a sacrifice fly to center. (9-6, Alabama)
