KNOXVILLE, TN—The University of Alabama women's soccer team (9-9, 5-5 in the Southeastern Conference) fought valiantly but was unable to recover from a 2-0 deficit, dropping a 2-1 match against the sixth-ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers (12-3-2, 9-1).
The two teams battled back and forth throughout the first half before the Lady Vols were finally able to get on the board with 7:55 left in the half. Genna Gorman took a shot inside the box that was deflected by Tide goalie Laura Lowman, but Emily Redberg was there for the put back and the 1-0 lead.
Bama had its opportunities in the first frame with the first chance coming on a Libby Probst break-away. Probst found herself one-on-one with Tennessee goalie Vanessa Phillips-Bosshart, but her shot hit off the left post denying the Tide a 1-0 lead.
Chelsea Stang had an opportunity to tie the game at 1-1 when she took a shot off a restart that Phillips-Bosshart deflected over the top of the goal at the last second denying Stang and the Tide a game-tying goal.
Tennessee extended its lead 15 minutes into the second half when Gorman took a pass from Keeley Dowling off a restart from Sue Flamini and put it in the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.
Hayley MacDonald cut the Lady Vol lead in half when she followed up a rebound off her own shot for the goal and a 2-1 game.
Tide head coach Don Staley made a last minute substitution in the nets to get an extra attacker on the field but Bama ran out of time.
"Despite being down 2-0, our kids were relentless," said Staley. "They've done it all year and I'm extremely proud of them. Tennessee is a very good team, the class of the league. We knew they would come out strong and they capitalized on our mistakes."
Alabama will close out its SEC season on Friday when the team travels to the Plains to take on the Auburn Tigers.
