TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama soccer team fell, 1-0, to the Ole Miss Rebels on a windy Sunday afternoon at the Alabama Soccer Complex.
"This one hurts," said Head Coach Todd Bramble. "It's one of the first times where we are walking away from a game where we are disappointed in ourselves. Ole Miss is a good team. We weren't ourselves today and we are disappointed in our performance."
The Crimson Tide produced 17 shots, eight on goal, but was unable to break through. Alabama controlled the ball for much of the second half and kept possession for nearly all of the final two minutes, but could not score the equalizer.
Ole Miss tallied the game's lone goal in the 20th minute when midfielder Jennifer Miller struck on her second goal of the season. Miller slashed to the goal and received the pass from Olivia Harrison, banging the shot past a diving Emily Rusk to set the Rebels ahead, 1-0.
With the game nearing a close, Alabama's Jordan Meier banged a shot that nearly sank in the goal but went too high in the 88th minute. Following Meier's shot, Theresa Diederich placed her corner into traffic but to no avail, as Alabama was called for a foul. Time would eventually expire with the Tide falling short.
"It's up to us to figure out why (Alabama did not win)," said Bramble. "(Ole Miss) looked like they had more energy today. They looked mentally sharper out there too. They looked like they were emotionally invested in the game. These are questions that we need to address."
After today's game, Alabama falls to 7-4-2, with a 2-2-1 SEC record. With the win, Ole Miss moves to 7-3-4 and 2-1-3 in SEC play.
The Tide will head to Baton Rouge for its first Thursday game of the season on Oct. 9. Alabama and LSU will square off in the LSU Soccer Stadium at 6 p.m. CT. The game will air on the SEC Network.
