"Getting six points to start out SEC play is huge," Alabama head coach Todd Bramble said. "Sunday is always a grind and you have to count on your depth, and our players responded. It was survival of the fittest today and we were able to pass the test."
With the shutout, Alabama goalkeeper Justine Bernier recorded her third straight clean sheet and 13th of her career, which breaks the Alabama career record. The Canadian international keeper earned the shutout on the strength of eight saves.
In the 53rd minute the Tide broke the silence at the Alabama Soccer Stadium. Freshman Kendall Khanna tallied her first career goal when she volleyed home a cross from senior Victoria Frederick. The assist was her third on the year.
Alabama added an insurance goal with just under 10 minutes remaining when senior Brooke Rogers continued her scoring barrage. The target forward headed home a cross from Frederick near post to give the Tide the 2-0 lead. The goal is the sixth on the season for Rogers and the fourth helper on the year for Frederick.
The six goals for Rogers marks a season best and the four assists for Frederick equals her career best, set in 2008.
The Tide out-shot the Bulldogs 20-18 with the freshman Khanna leading the way five. Fellow freshman Molly Atherton fired off four shots and put three on frame.
Alabama will hit the road for the first time in conference play as it will head to Baton Rouge to face LSU. The Tide and Tigers will meet on Friday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. Alabama will then cap off the weekend in Fayetteville, Ark., with a Sunday match against the Razorbacks. The two teams will kickoff at 1 p.m. on Oct. 3.
